Highway 7 Scenic Drive (to Hot Springs) — This is Arkansas's most famous scenic highway, and the section from Russellville south through the Ouachita Mountains is stunning. In fall, the foliage rivals anything in New England. Stop at Petit Jean State Park along the way for Cedar Falls and canyon views.
Hot Springs National Park (55 min) — America's oldest national reserve offers thermal baths, gorgeous Bathhouse Row architecture, and a funky downtown. The drive itself is pleasant, and once you arrive, you can soak, hike, shop, and eat your way through a full day. Superior Bathhouse Brewery — the only brewery inside a national park — is a must.
Petit Jean State Park (1 hr 15 min) — The centerpiece is Cedar Falls, a 95-foot waterfall accessible via a moderate 2-mile trail. Beyond that, the park offers Seven Hollows Trail for ambitious hikers, canyon overlooks, and Mather Lodge for dinner with a view.
Mountain View (2 hrs) — The "Folk Music Capital of the World" is worth every minute of the drive. On weekend evenings, musicians gather on the courthouse square for impromptu jam sessions. The Ozark Folk Center State Park preserves traditional crafts and music in a beautiful setting.
Crater of Diamonds State Park (1 hr 40 min) — The world's only diamond mine open to the public. You'll dig in a plowed field searching for diamonds, and yes, people regularly find them. Even without a diamond, it's a uniquely Arkansas experience.
Heber Springs (1 hr 15 min) — Greers Ferry Lake is one of the clearest lakes in the state, perfect for swimming, kayaking, and lakeside lounging. The town itself has charm with local restaurants and antique shops.
