Things to Do in Little Rock This Weekend (Aug 15-17)
Mid-August in Little Rock means two things: heat that peaks around 3 p.m., and a calendar that finally starts leaning into fall programming. The plan below is built around that reality. Get outside early, get indoors or under a fan in the afternoon, and save the good stuff for after sunset.
Friday Night: Live Music Downtown
Start on President Clinton Avenue in the River Market District. Doors at most downtown rooms open around 7 p.m., with headliners hitting the stage between 8:30 and 9:30.
- Stickyz Rock 'N' Roll Chicken Shack, 107 River Market Ave - the reliable pick for touring indie and regional rock. Order chicken fingers before the opener; the kitchen slows down once the room fills.
• Rev Room, 300 President Clinton Ave - bigger stage, bigger sound, and a balcony that stays cooler than the floor.
• The Hall, 721 W 9th St - the newest of the three, with better sightlines than anywhere else in the city.
Parking: the River Market garage on Commerce Street runs about 5 dollars after 6 p.m. and puts you a two-minute walk from all three rooms. Street parking on Second Street is free after 6 p.m. but disappears fast on a Friday.
Saturday Morning: Beat the Heat
Be at a trailhead by 7 a.m. The temperature difference between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. in mid-August is routinely fifteen degrees, and the parking lots tell the same story.
- Arkansas River Trail, Two Rivers Park entrance - flat, shaded in stretches, and good for a three to six mile out-and-back. Watch for herons in the sloughs on the north side.
• Pinnacle Mountain West Summit Trail - 1.4 miles round trip, steep and rocky, but you are back down before the rock face turns into a skillet.
• Allsopp Park - close to Hillcrest, mostly shaded, and forgiving if you have kids in tow.
Bring more water than you think you need. There are no reliable fill stations on the Pinnacle summit trails.
Saturday Midday: Market and Lunch
The Bernice Garden Farmers Market in SoMa runs Sunday mornings, but Saturday belongs to the Little Rock Farmers Market at the River Market Pavilions, roughly 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. August is peak tomato, okra, and peach season, and the peach vendors typically sell out before 11.
For lunch, walk two blocks west and eat somewhere with real air conditioning. The Main Street corridor between Fourth and Seventh has the highest concentration of good midday food downtown.
Saturday Night: Pick Your Volume
If Friday's show was loud, dial Saturday down. Brave New Restaurant on the water has terrace seating with a sunset view over the Arkansas River - book a 7:30 table and you will be seated as the light turns gold. If you want the opposite, the Loony Bin Comedy Club runs two shows on Saturday night, and the late show is the looser one.
Sunday: Slow Morning, Early Finish
Sunday is for the Bernice Garden Farmers Market in South Main, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by a walk down Main Street. Raduno Brick Oven and Barroom opens for the afternoon and is the neighborhood's most dependable table.
If the weather breaks and you get a cloudy afternoon, take advantage: the Big Dam Bridge is far more pleasant under overcast skies, and the loop from Murray Park across the bridge and back is about seven miles.
Weather Watch
Mid-August in Central Arkansas averages a high near 93 with humidity that makes it feel closer to 102 in the afternoon. Pop-up thunderstorms are common between 3 and 6 p.m. and usually clear within an hour. Check radar before committing to an outdoor dinner reservation.
