Family-Friendly Weekend Activities in Central Arkansas
Central Arkansas is unusually good for families, mostly because the distances are short. You can be at the zoo, a science museum, a state park, and a splash pad all in the same weekend without spending an hour in the car.
Little Rock Zoo

Thirty-three acres in War Memorial Park with more than 500 animals. It is the right size - big enough for a real morning, small enough that a five-year-old can walk most of it.
- Go at opening. Animals are most active in the first two hours, and by 11 a.m. in summer most of them have found shade.
• The train and carousel cost extra and are worth it as a bribe for the walk back.
• Strollers are rentable but bring your own if you have one.
• Parking is on-site and free.
Museum of Discovery

The hands-on science museum in the River Market. Everything is meant to be touched. The Tinkering Studio and the Tornado Alley exhibit hold kids longest.
- Best on a hot afternoon or a rainy day. This is the indoor backup plan.
• Weekday mornings during the school year are calm; Saturdays are busy.
• Park in the River Market garage on Commerce Street.
Clinton Presidential Center

More engaging for kids than a presidential library sounds. The full-scale Oval Office replica and the Air Force One cabin are the draws, and the grounds outside are open, green, and free to walk.
- The park along the river behind the building is the best free space downtown for letting kids run.
• The Rock Island Bridge connects the grounds to the Clinton Presidential Park Wetlands, a boardwalk trail that is short, flat, and full of turtles.
Two Rivers Park
Two Rivers Park Rd, Little Rock, AR 72223
Where the Little Maumelle meets the Arkansas River. Flat paved trails, a pedestrian bridge, community gardens, and enough space that it never feels crowded.
- The bridge itself is the attraction for younger kids.
• Strollers and balance bikes work well here; the paths are paved.
• Free, with a parking lot at the entrance.
Pinnacle Mountain State Park - the Easy Version
Skip the summit with small children. The Arkansas Arboretum near the Visitor Center is a half-mile paved loop, stroller accessible, and the Visitor Center itself has exhibits and clean restrooms. The Kingfisher Trail along the Little Maumelle is flat and shaded.
Free and Nearly Free
- Riverfront Park splash pad and sculpture garden, downtown.
• Burns Park, North Little Rock - one of the largest municipal parks in the country, with playgrounds, disc golf, and miles of trails.
• Allsopp Park, Hillcrest - shaded playground and easy trails.
• The Bernice Garden in SoMa - sculpture garden and Sunday farmers market with room to roam.
• Central Arkansas Library System branches run free children's programming most weeks.
Planning Notes
- Summer weekends: outdoor in the morning, indoor from noon to 4, outdoor again after 6.
• Most museums here are closed Mondays. Check before you drive.
• Central Arkansas afternoon thunderstorms in August are common and short. Have one indoor option in your back pocket.
