Paddling the Arkansas River through Little Rock is one of those experiences that makes you fall in love with the city all over again. The river is accessible, the scenery is beautiful, and the paddling community is welcoming to beginners.
Where to launch: Rock Town River Outfitters is the most popular starting point for guided and self-guided trips. They offer kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals with all equipment included. Other popular launch points include Murray Park (free public launch), Two Rivers Park, and Riverdale.
The downtown paddle: The most popular route takes you past the Clinton Presidential Center, under the Junction Bridge, and along the River Market District. It's a 2–3 hour paddle (depending on current and pace) with constant scenic interest. The city skyline from water level is a perspective most people never get to see.
What to bring: Sunscreen (you'll be exposed the whole time), water, snacks, and a dry bag for your phone and keys. The outfitter provides paddles, life jackets, and a shuttle back to your car. Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet.
Best conditions: Spring and fall offer the best paddling conditions — comfortable temperatures, lower water levels, and beautiful scenery. Summer is doable but hot; start early to avoid the afternoon sun. Check water levels before going — high water after heavy rain makes the river faster and less suitable for beginners.
Wildlife on the water: The river corridor is teeming with wildlife. Great blue herons are almost guaranteed sightings, and you might spot turtles, river otters, and — from November through February — bald eagles. The perspective from a kayak puts you closer to the action than any trail.
Guided vs. self-guided: First-timers should book a guided trip. The guides know the river, point out wildlife, and handle the logistics. Experienced paddlers can rent equipment and go self-guided — just file a float plan with the outfitter.
Pro tip: Golden hour paddles (launching 2 hours before sunset) are magical. The light on the water is gorgeous, the city starts to glow, and the temperature drops to comfortable levels. Some outfitters offer special sunset paddle trips.
